Little Read’s Rating Scale

My rating scale is in pictures. In order to understand it, you’ve got to read this page. If you feel a book was unfairly rated, please email me and let me know. (My email address is on the About page.)

Also, I would like to say that none of these are BAD books. None of them are truly scary, or dangerous, or sick or wrong in any way, but they do broach topics that some people may be more sensitive to than others, for whatever reason.

Just for reference, when I say scary, I don’t mean werewolves biting people’s heads off scary, I mean conflict scary. I don’t read thrillers. You will get something out of the book, no matter how “scary” it is.

You could read this story to Grandma or little sis without feeling uncomfortable.

You should not read this to Grandma or little Sis. Your young, hip aunt may be okay with it, but if you read this to Grandma, you risk both a coronary and a painfully long lecture. (Language, Sexuality, typically not violent)

You’re alone in this book. You may be able to read it to your best friend, but I warn you, there are a lot of topics in this book that could be either uncomfortable or sad. (Inappropriate language, sex, sexuality, violence, child abuse, domestic abuse, slavery, extreme poverty, great loss, suicide, death.)

This one crosses a couple of boundaries. It can be many things, ranging from Sister-appropriate to Friend-appropriate to Grandma-appropriate. These books are typically autobiography or non-fiction. They are not written for 8- 19 year olds, but can be enjoyed by all. This can have almost anything in it. So for this book, I’ll put the following picture and one other, in order to convey a rating)

Just for reference, when I say scary, I don’t mean werewolves biting people’s heads off scary, I mean conflict scary. I don’t read thrillers. You will get something out of the book, no matter how “scary” it is.
